This profile is intended only as a base to be built onto. For example, I had originally intended for Jon to know no magic at all, until someone else had him cast a small vanishing spell. Had they not made the change, I would have missed the opportunity for some very good jokes (In my humble opinion, anyway). So, feel free to mess with anything in this profile a bit. It's only a guideline, not concrete.
Also, I just went through and wrote down all the stuff about my character that I think will help others write for him. You've read my chapters, and you know how much I carry on. Other profiles need not be this thorough. Only what you want to reveal about your character.
Jon Spike
General:
- not a warrior (he knows enough to brain someone with his walking stick, tho)
- knows almost no magic. More details later
- intelligent, skilled chemist & scientist
- good with a guitar
- good at quick and silent running-away and sneaking activities
Personality:
- Jon is a fairly happy-go-lucky guy, aloof even in highly unpleasant situations, playfully complaining at and through adversity. When his survival is threatened, or some other clear, short-term goal is present, he continues to sound silly, but acts deadly serious. Given something frightening enough he can be scared, but will still be able to function. Finally, he's got a few inner demons... the death of his father, lingering guilt about his past, and some shame about not being adequately skilled in combat.
Physical appearance:
- Approaching 20 years of age
- Tall, 6'3 or 4' (when I said "small man" in chapter 44, I was actually referring to my size relative to the world, and relative to the powers of other people in the story... Not exactly obvious, I know. Sorry)
- lanky (ok, so my first character looks a lot like me. I'll do something different next time)
- a long (as in vertically) face, and handsome in an odd way
- spiked hair to go with the name
- dressed in a brown tunic and pants, with a forest green traveling cloak and hood
- carries a 7' walking stick (can be used for a short range pole-vault, weapon, etc), small blue cross on a chain around his neck, a backpack, and a short sword in an oiled leather sheath covered with dark blue metal inlay
In his backpack:
- a small collection of demon-possessed tin monkeys (though he doesn't know they are possessed). The monkeys are able to scare off any magic-using member of Evil People Inc., as well as disrupt their spells. When the demons become active they gain mobility, demonic strength, and the ability to summon an unknown number of additional tin demon-monkeys through magic. They are currently dormant, due to a sealing spell placed on them by Ivy.
- various powders and liquids that, when mixed, produce explosives, poisonous and knockout gasses, and poisons of varying strength. There may also be a few extra chemicals and the like for doing weird things to metal, producing smoke, making neat flashy effects when thrown into a fire, etc.
- some beakers, stoppers and the like for mixing above concoctions
- a few smoke bombs, and a couple normal explosives too
- a couple days food and small skin-container of water
There's really not much limit on what else could be in there, as long as it would realistically fit and could be afforded or found by a fairly poor traveler.
Magic:
-
Jon Spike is not much of a magic user. He knows one small (squeaky-clean) white magic spell that causes the object it is cast upon (including people) to vanish from sight. The vanished object remains visible to the caster of the spell, in sort of a glowy transparent ghost fashion. He also knows a spell to make the object, if it is a living thing, visible to itself. Finally, with Ivy's help, he has learned an un-vanishing spell as well. He could probably learn a couple more simple spells in the future, but if there is something funny that could happen as a result, there's a good chance it might. In dangerous situations, he can usually make them work well enough though.
His magic spells are cast with a four-line verse (this method is open to modification), and he must be careful with his wording or the spell he is casting will think it knows what he wants better than him. Try not to use this gag _too_ much please. Keep it fresh for when you can make a really good use of it.
History:
- A lot of this information I'm gonna hold back on. He has been many things in the last five years, including a minstrel, preacher, juggler in a circus, student, and sleight-of-hand magician (the kind who doesn't use any actual magic). But mostly he has been a wanderer. He has studied chemistry and the guitar for a lot longer than 5 years. Finally, his dad gave him some basic training in combat when he was very young, but most of it has been forgotten by now.
